About Me

A little bit about me...

I’m Qiao En, formerly a healthcare operations professional, a history buff (peep my Bachelor's in History!) and now a User Experience designer.

Sounds random? These experiences were actually driven by a common passion - my love for understanding the human psyche and how things are built and experienced by ourselves and those around us.

With these experiences under my belt, I’m now a UX designer who seeks to understand complex needs and processes in order to distill them into intuitive user-friendly experiences.

When I’m not working on UX projects, you can find me listening to podcasts, reading books, or indulging myself in a good 'ol cup of coffee!

With these experiences under my belt, I’m now a designer who is adaptable, analytical, and methodical, with a keen ability to understand complex systems and processes and distill them into intuitive, user-friendly experiences.

I’m open to learning and trying new things!

If you’d like to work together but don’t see the software your team uses here, let me know and I’d love to learn it :)

I believe in...

  1. Stay curious and open-minded!

While assumptions can work as initial goalposts, it’s important to remain critical of my own biases. I should always be aware of my assumptions and seek out other perspectives to create products that are more inclusive and usable for a wider range of people.

  1. If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again.

Failure is a natural part of the design process; ideas that seem great on paper don't always translate well in the real world. However, these ‘failures’ aren’t a dead-end but a growth point to learn and iterate from. I remind myself to enjoy the design process and when I reach a viable solution, success will taste sweeter!

  1. Have fun!

Most importantly, find fun and embrace playfulness when designing. Fun is a crucial element to encouraging a creative process, and it’s also key to staying passionate and finding new ways to grow as a designer. Of course, this also means incorporating delightful elements into my design so users have fun too :)

How does my past experience make me a better designer?

Prior to becoming a UX designer, I was in healthcare working as a clinical operations executive in a start-up hospital.

I spent my days designing physical spaces, user journeys, or workflows while donning the hats of a complex matrix of users - be it patients, next-of-kin, clinical users or support staff.

From this experience, I’ve developed skillsets in project and people management, as well as handling cross-functional discussions to arrive at solutions that balance between feasibility, business goals, and user needs.

As part of a start-up hospital, I was also trained to think quickly on my feet to adapt to an ever-changing array of challenges.

Before that, I was pursuing a Bachelor’s in History at National University of Singapore (NUS).

Research, questioning assumptions, asking the ‘whys’... I love it all! My background in humanities and in particular, history, has moulded me into a curious explorer.

This is evident in my design process - I am methodical in my research and love going beyond the tip of the iceberg. I believe that discovering great solutions starts with systematic and thoughtful insights and data.

As a designer I’m methodical, analytical and curious - I’m always asking ‘why’ to uncover the factors that make us tick.
